When to talk with a vascular surgeon
Leg pain, cold feet, numbness, or wounds that heal slowly can be signs of an underlying circulation problem.
Your vascular system carries blood throughout your body. When arteries narrow or become blocked, symptoms can appear gradually and may be easy to dismiss.
Symptoms worth discussing
- Leg pain or cramping that starts with walking and improves with rest
- Foot or toe pain while sitting or lying down
- One foot or leg that feels colder than the other
- Numbness, skin color changes, or reduced hair growth on the legs
- Wounds on the feet or lower legs that heal slowly or not at all
Early evaluation matters
A vascular evaluation can help identify the cause of symptoms. Testing may include a physical examination, blood-pressure measurements in the legs, vascular ultrasound, or other imaging. The result can help your care team decide whether lifestyle changes, medication, surveillance, a minimally invasive procedure, or surgery is appropriate.
When symptoms are urgent
Sudden severe pain, a cold or pale limb, new weakness, signs of stroke, severe chest pain, or sudden severe abdominal or back pain can require emergency care. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.
